There is always one...
Sunday, September 21, 2008 19:09

Another Ouch!Whatever you do, there is always somebody who has to go one better. While we were out at Sherwood earlier John manage this rather impressive clawing while stood still...

He was back on his SPD pedals for the first time in a long time and somehow managed to miss the pedal while clipping in and seconds later was lying on his back across the back wheel having gouged his calf on the crank.

While his cuts are a bit more impressive - or at least more symmetrical - than mine from a few weeks ago the method by which they were gained was far less worthy. Where I was charging down a hill in the rain with very little in the way of brakes, John was standing still just seconds before.

We managed one our longest rides at Sherwood that I think we've done - 16 miles in total, although that did include a stop back at the cafe after the first 10 for a spot of lunch.

On a new technology front, John was also trying a new gps tracking / recording app for his iPhone to record the first part of the ride. The results are pretty impressive - you can view the route for the first 10 miles at http://www.trailguru.com/wiki/index.php/Track:Y11.

The plan was to track the second 6 mile session after lunch too, but it seems iPhone batteries just aren't quite up to that yet...

Death Magnetic
Friday, September 19, 2008 22:53

Death Magnetic is Metallica's new album and by all the reviews I've read is their best for years.

The entire album is now available to buy as a downloadable track pack for Guitar Hero III on XBox 360 (1440 microsoft points - about £12) and PS3 (price unknown)...

Some would say the guitar hero version sounds evenbetter than the cd.

All 1.34Gb has just finished downloading, so time for some rock action!

This could be a long night....

Creeping darkness...
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 20:19

Just been out for a ride after work with the two Andys around the usual little 10 mile loop we do.

It's been a couple of weeks since we last did it, due to various holidays, me still hurting from my crash at Cannock and what have you, so tonights ride came with a stark realisation.

Summer is gone. Not that we really ever had one this year.

By the time we finished at around 20 past 7 it was starting to get dark, and by the time I got home at around 8 o'clock it was properly dark.

Time to dig my lights out again...

Follow The Wet Dog
Saturday, September 06, 2008 21:33

Ouch that stings! Went to Cannock this morning to introduce Andy (Clanchy) to Follow The Dog.

In keeping with the rest of the week the weather was abysmal, and as I drove through the third torrential downpour on my way over I did wonder why the hell I was bothering.

Anyway, having forded the floods en route I met up with Andy at around 11:15 in a rather damp car park and we set off into the drizzle.

I've only ridden the dog in the dry, and it was hard work then. In the wet it can only be described as treacherous, with 6inch deep lakes in the bottom of every dip, and only mud and wet roots and pebbles to ride on - none of which are great in the grip or traction department. This made some of the tighter bends and steeper hills quite an interesting experience.

I was further hindered by the fact that my rear brakes pretty much gave up about half way round, which made stopping at the bottom of hills and slowing up for bends even more tricky than it would usually have been. Oh how I long for disc brakes, but alas while my new forks will allow front discs to be fitted, my frame is from a pre-disc era and lacks the required mounting brackets :(

Having survived most of the trail without major incident (although some very near misses had the adrenaline flowing) I finally managed my first major off of the year.

Section 16 of the trail (see here for the map) has been closed for maintenance on my previous visits, but reopened some time in August. On my inaugural run through this section of tree lined single track I managed to shoulder charge a tree at around 15mph after my front wheel lost all grip and through me sideways into the scenery.

My left shoulder took the brunt of the impact and is now bruised and has a bit of a graze on it. The force of the impact means I now have shooting pains across my back, mostly in my right shoulder which theoretically escaped the unharmed, but I obviously twisted something in the impact. As you can see in the picture above I also shredded my right calf on my pedal as I went down.

Despite the weather and the off, it was really quite a decent mornings riding, although I may need to invest in some new brake blocks for the back end before I go out again!
